“When Jesus saw his mother there, and the disciple whom he loved standing nearby, he said to his mother, ‘Dear woman, here is your son,’ and to the disciple, ‘Here is your mother.’” John 19:25-27
What do mothers do? (Act it out)
This passage may seem a bit odd, but in this time, and still for many people today, it was common for elderly to rely fully on their children to take care of them in their old age. This was especially true for women.
Jesus is on the cross, taking the punishment for our sins. He is not in good shape, and he looks over to see his mom and he feels compassion for her. His father is dead. Who will care for her? So he tells John to take care of her - treat her like she was his own mother. Jesus truly loved his mom. And he shows that here.
He also loves all moms and he shows that throughout the Bible. Jesus knows something all mothers know, that being a mother is hard! Being a single mother is very hard! Throughout the Bible, God teaches us the importance of taking care of widows and elderly women. God does not abandon us when we need help. Even when Jesus was on the cross dying for his mom’s (and our) sins, he took time to look out for her physical needs also. We can show Christ’s love for others in the same way - by helping them with their physical needs and then teaching them about how Christ also took care of their spiritual needs.
